Crossing the High Atlas

Day 1: Marrakech

Arrival at the Menara airport. Transfer to the hotel or Riad.

Day 2: Marrakech – Aït Bougmez Valley (1900m)

After breakfast, transfer by minibus or 4WD to the Aït Bougmez Valley (also named the Happy Valley), starting point of our hike where we will meet the muleteers. Overnight stay in a local gîte.

Day 3: Aît Bougmez Valley – lkiss n’Arous (2100m)

Walk through the valley (visit Marabout sidi moussa) and crossing the Arous village to reach the first campsite at lkiss n’arous.

Day 4: lkiss n’Arous – Plateau of Tarkeddit (2910m)

Steady climb up to cross Ighiln-lkkis (3200m), followed by a descent to the campsite on the plateau of Tarkeddit.

Optional day: Ascending the M’goun Peak (4065m)

Departure before sunrise to reach the peak before noon. Admiring the magnificent views across the Rose Valley and the Pre-Saharian area. Return to the basecamp on the plateau of Tarkeddit.

Day 5 or 6: Tarkeddit – Tighremt n’Aït Ahmed (2235m)

Descent to Tighremt n’Aït Ahmed passing gorgeous pillars of eroded rocks and the Oulilimt Valley with its rudimentary nomad houses and tents.

Day 6 or 7: Tighremt n’Aït Ahmed – Imi Nirkt (2010m)

Beautiful day of walking in the M’goun Valley through many villages, campsite in Imi Nirkt at the entrance of the M’goun Canyon.

Day 7 or 8: Imi Nirkt – Tighranimin (1770m)

Walking in the river through one of the most spectacular areas of southern Morocco, the M’goun Canyon.

Day 8 or 9: Tighranimin – Boutaghrar (1704m)

On our last day of hiking we will enter the Rose Valley, we will cross some pretty, authentic villages (Issoumar,…) to finish our trip in an auberge near Boutaghrar.

Day 9 or 10: Boutaghrar – Ouarzazate (or Marrakech)

Transfer by minibus or 4WD to Ouarzazate (100km) or to Marrakech (300km), overnight stay in a hotel (Ouarzazate or Marrakech)

Day 10 or 11: Ouarzazate (or Marrakech): return flight
